Police say arrests have been made and weapons have been recovered in connection with a brazen daylight shooting in Dorchester on Saturday morning that left at least eight people hospitalized and cast a shadow over the city’s annual Caribbean festival. Officers responding to a reported shooting in the area of Blue Hill and Talbot avenues around 7:45 a.m. found all of the victims suffering from what were considered non-life-threatening injuries, according to Boston police. The shooting delayed the beginning of the Caribbean festival, which stepped off and continued as planned amid the investigation. At least two people were arrested in connection with the shooting and firearms were recovered.Boston Mayor Michelle Wu decried the violence while speaking with reporters later in the morning. “It’s just heart-wrenching to hear that a treasured community event has been disrupted by acts of violence from those who had nothing to do with the event and there’s absolutely...Police: Man dies in fall from Portsmouth, NH parking garage after assault

The Chicago White Sox were eager to show 2022 was an aberration.Instead, they took a huge step back.Friday’s 12-4 loss against the Oakland Athletics at Guaranteed Rate Field was the latest example on the field in a season gone wrong.Starter Dylan Cease allowed eight earned runs and walked five in 4 1/3 innings. The team made two errors in the second inning and another in the fifth. After surrendering five home runs in Thursday’s loss to the A’s, the Sox allowed two more Friday as they fell a season-worst 29 games under .500.Asked afterward about the errors, manager Pedro Grifol went beyond saying, “the whole thing is frustrating.”“We’ve got to get better,” he said. “That’s plain and simple. It’s not for lack of trying. These guys are out there doing their work. We’ve just got to get better.“There’s no excuses.”The Sox will lose the season series to the A’s, who have the worst record in ba...Ex-Dodgers Turner, Verdugo lift Red Sox to chaotic 8-5 victory over LA

Winning the breakup is a big part of baseball; when given the chance, make your former team regret letting you go.That’s exactly what Alex Verdugo and Justin Turner did on Saturday, lifting the Red Sox to a 8-5 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers.Since Day 1, Verdugo has wanted to be more than the guy from the Mookie Betts trade. While trades are a part of this business, it’s still quite an unfair position, finding oneself dealt to one of the game’s most historic franchises in exchange for one of its most decorated homegrown stars. The pile of money Harry Frazee received from the New York Yankees in exchange for Babe Ruth never had to face repeated questions and commentary about the transaction, but Verdugo has been dissected, discussed, and compared to Betts ever since. So when the two finally got to square off at Fenway Park this weekend, the spotlight got even brighter. Especially since both were in the leadoff spot on Friday and Saturday and starting in right field in th...Boil water advisory lifted for Imperial Beach, Coronado residents

SAN DIEGO -- The boil water advisory for residents in Imperial Beach and Coronado's Silver Strand was lifted early Saturday night after local water officials confirmed there was no longer a presence of bacteria. The advisory was issued on Thursday after E. Coli bacteria was detected in the drinking water system, impacting customers of the utility company, California America Water. Portions of Chula Vista were also placed under the warning. After the advisory was issued, officials had to conduct an investigation to determine the source of the bacteria and repair it before flushing the water. Then, the water had to be tested again, with two rounds coming back negative for E. coli. The lifting of the advisory means the bacteria was no longer detected in the water supply, allowing residents to resume normal water use. PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — A powerful gang opened fire Saturday on a large group of parishioners led by a pastor as they marched through a community armed with machetes to rid the area of gang members. The attack was filmed in real time by journalists at the scene, and several people were killed and others injured, Marie Yolène Gilles, director of human rights group Fondasyon Je Klere, told The Associated Press. She watched online as hundreds of people from a local church marched through Canaan, a makeshift town in the outskirts of the capital of Port-au-Prince founded by survivors who lost their homes in the devastating 2010 earthquake. It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were killed and injured in the attack.Canaan is controlled by a gang led by a man identified only as “Jeff,” who is believed to be allied with the “5 Seconds” gang.Gangs have grown more powerful since the July 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, and they are estimated to control up to 80% of Port...Keeler: Broncos fans trust Sean Payton. Hell hath no fury like a woman with an El Camino scorned. Especially if that El Camino is painted orange and blue.“I mean, I expect us to at least make the playoffs this year,” Crystal Gonzalez told me before her beloved Broncos hosted the Rams in Denver’s preseason finale on Saturday night.“Yeah, I’m very confident in the new coach. I think he’s going to change some things and we’re going to have a better group of guys on the field. I think we’re going to get it done. I’m pretty loyal though. I mean, look. I have a car.”Lordy, what a car. As we talked two blocks from Empower Field, Gonzalez, Denverite and Broncos For Life, waved back at the family’s tailgate ride, a gorgeous ’70 El Camino, the way the models wave at the prize cars on “The Price Is Right.” A giant, flat-screen television sat in the middle of a bed that was lined, back to front, with soft Astroturf.“Eleven and six,” Gonzalez continued. “I’d say 11-6. We’re going to take one from the Chie...Russell Wilson, Broncos starters not playing in preseason finale vs. Rams

Most of the Broncos’ starters got multiple series of playing time in each of the team’s first two preseason games. Then they got heavy workloads Wednesday and Thursday against the Los Angeles Rams. That made for a light night Saturday against the Rams.Virtually none of Denver’s starters dressed for the team’s preseason finale and lone home preseason game.Among players who could end up starting or could be considered near the top line of the depth chart, only fullback Michael Burton and rookie wide receiver Marvin Mims, Jr. were in uniform. In all, 32 players on the 90-man roster didn’t dress and most of them are expected to be key contributors. That list, of course, included quarterback Russell Wilson, his entire starting offensive line, running backs Javonte Williams and Samaje Perine, and most of the rest of Denver’s offensive weaponry.Defensively, none of the top line played and all of Denver’s top four edge rushers — Randy Gregory, Frank Clark, Nik Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper — wer...Excessive heat warnings in effect for Southen California
