DENVER (KDVR) — Lawmakers at the state Capitol are done with this year's session. Senators gaveled out around 10 p.m. Monday night after the House wrapped up around 9:45 p.m. No surprise that things did not end on a quiet note.Lawmakers are leaving this year's session thinking about walkouts, housing, property and how they can better work together in the future. The day after the end of the session, there were differing opinions about the work lawmakers did during their 120 days at the Capitol."This session delivered real results on the issues that matter to Coloradans," House Speaker Julie McCluskie said Tuesday morning, reflecting on the session at a press briefing. Colorado passes property tax bill "We're sad that the people of Colorado are not living a life that is any more affordable because of this legislative session, that in fact, life is not any safer in Colorado because of this session," Senate Minority Leader Paul Lundeen said at the Senate GOP press conference."We were...Turkey’s Erdoğan risks alienating conservative women voters

ISTANBUL — How did a popular soap opera called “Cranberry Sherbet” suddenly become one of the most heated discussion points before Turkey’s crucial elections on Sunday? It’s all to do with a character called Nursema, and her shocking fate is pushing viewers to pose a tricky question: Who would she vote for? The answers are not comforting for President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who is seeking to extend his 20-year rule in the impending vote. Nursema is a strong, bright and devout Muslim in the show, and millions of Turkish women can easily identify with her. Turkey’s legions of soap addicts were stunned by a brutal plot twist in which she is married off to an abusive husband by her conservative family. He attempts to rape her, then shoves her out of a window when she resists, almost killing her. In early April, Turkey’s media watchdog reacted harshly to the harrowing storyline, doling out a fine to the makers of the series and slapping the drama with a ...Video shows bullet strike ground during Little League game in San Marcos

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Billboards across Iran’s capital proclaim that women should wear their mandatory headscarves to honor their mothers. But perhaps for the first time since the chaotic days following Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, more women — both young and old — choose not to do so.Such open defiance comes after months of protests over the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in the custody of the country’s morality police, for wearing her hijab too loosely. While the demonstrations appear to have cooled, the choice by some women not to cover their hair in public poses a new challenge to the country’s theocracy. The women’s pushback also lays bare schisms in Iran that had been veiled for decades.Authorities have made legal threats and closed down some businesses serving women not wearing the hijab. Police and volunteers issue verbal warnings in subways, airports and other public places. Text messages have targeted drivers who had women without head covering in ...Prosecutors want 25-year sentence in Texas protest killing

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Prosecutors are seeking at least 25 years in prison for a U.S. Army sergeant who fatally shot an armed man during a Black Lives Matter protest in Texas, saying his history of racist and provocative texts and social media posts expose a threat of violence likely to resurface.Daniel Perry, 36, is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday. He was convicted of murder in April for killing Garrett Foster during the downtown Austin protest in July 2020.On Tuesday, prosecutors submitted into evidence dozens of texts and social media posts Perry wrote, shared or liked, including some shockingly racist images. They had been excluded from Perry’s trial, but were publicly released after his conviction and allowed into the sentencing phase by District Judge Clifford Brown.Prosecutor Guillermo Gonzalez urged Brown to issue a sentence of at least 25 years. The sentencing range for the murder conviction is five years to life in prison.“This man is a loaded gun, ready to go off ...What to know about the mass shooting at a Texas mall

ALLEN, Texas (AP) — It took four minutes for a neo-Nazi with an arsenal of firearms to kill eight people and wound seven others at a Dallas-area shopping center before a police officer ended the rampage, likely saving untold lives. The massacre Saturday sent hundreds of shoppers at the Allen Premium Outlets scrambling for cover in shops, storerooms and closed hallways. Those killed included two elementary school-age sisters, a couple and their 3-year-old son, and a security guard who had helped others escape.Allen, a multicultural suburb of 105,000, is left as the latest U.S. community rent by an eruption of violence in a year that has seen an unprecedented pace of mass killings.Investigators say they have yet to establish a motive and that the gunman had no criminal record. But they’ve acknowledged the authenticity of a social media account on which he displayed a fascination with white supremacy while offering what are, in retrospect, chilling hints of his research and planni...PHOTOS: Denver Nuggets overpower Phoenix Suns 118-102 in Game 5 of NBA Western Conference semifinals

County health officials issued a health advisory Tuesday warning residents and visitors to avoid certain downtown streets until residue from a rare and significant mercury spill has been safely removed.Around 3 p.m. Monday, the county health department’s hazardous materials team responded to a report of the spill in the Amtrak train station’s parking lot, 601 Marina Vista Ave. Contra Costa County Fire Protection District paramedics had been at the station for a prior medical call, but saw and recognized mercury on the ground. Crews then found mercury inside the train station itself.By Tuesday afternoon, team members working with federal Environmental Protection Agency staff found more mercury in the street and gutters along a five-block route from the station. Those amounts were not expected to cause immediate health risks, but could affect people and animals who walk through the area and track the mercury indoors to homes and businesses.County health department deputy ...Latest news
